Notes from Coordinating Group Meeting - 25th April 2012

General update of groups and projects

Foraging

  • Foraging outing in Kent with Miles was a big success. Trip was organised by Marietta and Mark at a property in West Bere near Canterbury. Fifteen people attended, most from different Transition groups. The event took a lot of campaigning to fill the 16 places. Cost was £65 each for two days including meals. All money went through Transition Belsize accounts, expenses need to be finalised but there should be some money left over.

Spring Newsletter

Welcome to Spring!
Spring officially started this week, and Transition Belsize has some exciting news. The Royal Free Hospital has very kindly given Transition Belsize a plot of land for food growing. It’s in the Heath Strange Garden above the hospital car park. The plan is to plant fruit trees, fruit bushes and medicinal herbs, and to install raised beds so that the children at the hospital primary school can learn how to grow food.

March Newsletter

Spring is in the air, and Belsize Park is buzzing with energy. We’re planting berries and apples at the Fruitery and finishing our cob oven at Fitzjohn’s School. Learn about food growing with Transition Primrose Hill, swap seeds in Dartmouth Park or find out more about Brixton Energy’s pioneering community-owned solar power scheme.

We’ve also got bird-watching at the Adelaide Nature Reserve, classic films at the Hampstead Film Society, free energy awareness training from the council. If you want to find out how to make an old home energy efficient, don’t miss the SuperHomes open weekend on March 17th and 18th.

Cobblin' along

Final touches are being put on the first of the Education group's cob ovens to be built in our local schools.  Watch out for details on the launch pizza/ bread making session to be held at Fitzjohn's school in the new year

A cob oven, built from clay (dug up in the school's ground) and sand, is a fantastic way of teaching kids about low carbon building materials, as well as provding a great outdoor learning resource.

If you would like to build a cob oven at your local school, get in touch!

Veg-in Mondays..

The Transition Belsize/Hampstead Education group were recently invited to atttend the first ever Camden Green School Summit. During a very informative day, the group held informal chats with Caterlink, the Camden School Dinner provider. During these discussions, the idea was raised to pilot a meat/fish free Monday meal at selected school's during 2012...Caterlink gave the group a brief to come up with a 'fun' theme to encourage schools to join in with the pilot; an idea to 're-assure' parents that have a veg only meal one day of the week would not be seen as a 'cutting back on costs' but as advantageous to their kids - and the environment.

Man Can

The Man Can tour continues...

This year Man Can has met over 1,000 primary school kids at 5 local school assemblies. He has also been on tour in Englands Lane bookshop and Budgens, followed by a 8 week Summer holiday at Swiss Cottage library. His message to  encourage kids to cut down on packaging continues to be heard at Kentish Town library, where he is currently on tour! Next stop Queens Crescent and Holborn libraries!

If you would like Man Can to come and deliver his fun presentation at your school, get in touch!

Presentation on how Camden might be affected by Peak Oil and the fragility of the financial system

This presentation (attached below) was given to Camden's Emergency Planning Group on 17th November 2011 in an attempt to get people thinking about the possibly consequences of Peak Oil and/or the collapse of the financial system.

The Emergency Planning Group meets every two months to discuss how well Camden’s institutions, businesses and emergency services are prepared for incidents ranging from a flu epidemic to a major terrorist attack.

Community resilience and Transition - why the government needs both

The founder of the Transition movement, Rob Hopkins, gave a presentation in Norwich last week, at which he met a local authority emergency planner, who said that he had found the talk, and the Transition take on resilience, very illuminating.

Food Growing on Highways Licence

Almost everyone was optimistic and keen to make it work. It’s bigger than just TB since this would be the first time that any community organisation in London has been given the right to use Highways land like this. The one sticking point is what it actually means to be a named licensee, apart from giving Camden Council someone to contact if they have a question or there’s a problem. In theory any liabilities should be covered by our Public Liability Insurance. Alexis & Tom to check. NB See the bottom of this page for the draft licence as a Word document.
